Goals are the progressive realization of a worthy objective and are
only attained by a small group of people. According to a Yale University study that was done years ago, only 3 percent of the people who set goals actually reach them. The problems that stop people from reaching their goals are many, but a few are real obstacles.
Goals are thoughts that turn to dreams and are realized when commitments are joined together. Too often people use wishy-washy talk when it comes to setting goals. They flat out quit and when you ask them what happened, they use their out card, which is nothing more then disguised excuses. The more excuses a person uses, the more they will use to defend them.
With New Years on a first class ticket and right around the corner, most people put life on lay away and wait for the magic day of New Years Eve to set their New Years resolutions. For some people it seems to be the same thing every year. This year I want to lose weight, make more money and quit smoking.
Great!
Then they wake up New Year’s Day, hungover and say things like, I need a smoke or a drink and before you know it, they have broke two of their three resolutions before 3 p.m.
The other one resolution normally set aside on New Year’s Days is the result of the Bowl Games. The cookie bowl, chip bowl, brownie bowl are on every end table and before you know it, another resolution has bit the dust.
Crazy as it seems, most resolutions are broken by the first week of February and the reason why is most people don’t have a plan to reach their goals.
If you are going to achieve your goals this year, the first thing you need is a plan and the second thing is to improve your vocabulary.
Dr. Norman Vincent Peale author of The Power Of Positive Thinking said that the height of your goals will be set by your self talk. That means if you talk down to yourself, no problem you will be down on yourself. You’ve got to lift yourself up with your self talk and by using words that have power behind them.
Lets review the difference in the words below:
Weak Words Power Words
I might I will
I want to I’m going to
If only I know I can
But Yes
Try Will
Justify I can accept fault
I can’t I can
Yea but No excuses
Maybe Going to
Someday Now
Get tuit Do it now
Options open Only option
May go back No looking back
Sort of Decisive
Well, I think I know
Can you see the difference in the words? No matter what the goals are that you set this year, if you are wishy washy you will end up drowning in your “shoulds” this year. Have you ever played the game of shoulds in your life? “I should be doing this. I should be better at that. I should do what I say. I should commit. I should take care of myself better. I should quit smoking. I should make more money and soon all you do is SHOULD all over your-
self.”
It’s like people who say, oh I have to go to work today, or I have to get up, or I have to do this. Let me help you, you don’t have to do anything, you get to!
Georges Top Ten Goal Setting Secrets
1. Write your goals down on a goal card and review it daily to keep
focused
2. You don’t need to know how to get to your goals, you just need to know you will reach your goal
3. Take action immediately when setting your goals, you don’t have to wait until Monday to go on a diet.
4. Decide to reach your goal - commit to your decision
5. Throw out the word TRY in your life right now
6. Don’t share your goals with the under achievers of the world, they will tell you that it can’t be done.
7. Stretch your goals out of your current reach and think of goals like a ladder. Don’t be afraid to climb up the ladder of success.
8. Ask for help when it’s needed. Look at any successful business person or athlete, most of them have a personal coach or mentor. In the auto business it’s consultants, Twenty Groups and other industry experts.
9. Model your plan after someone that has already done it. Most recipes for success have been written and have been achieved. It might be time to move your ego and pride aside.
10. Do whatever it takes to reach your goals without sacrificing the most important people in your life along with your integ-
rity.
I once heard that the richest person is the person who has what they want and can enjoy what they have. Chasing things is a disease that is deadly. I know when you are ready to leave this earth, not one person is going to say, “Hey we really appreciate all those long hours you put in, or the extra sales you made, or thanks for giving up your home life so that you could be a successful business person, or, that was great that you got your sales to 200 cars a month.”
Life is short and you get one chance, why not chase the important things. For me, it comes down to God, family and work. The price you will pay for success is not worth it if you lose the above. Balance out your life and life will treat you good. Set goals in all areas of your life.
